Service History
The Golden Hind was an English galleon best known for its circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580, captained by Sir Francis Drake. She was originally known as the Pelican, but was renamed by Drake mid-voyage in 1578, as he prepared to enter the Strait of Magellan, calling it the Golden Hind to compliment his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose armorial crest was a golden 'hind' (the heraldic term for a female deer).
Three years later the Golden Hind returned to England the first English ship to circle the globe. The treasures in her booty laden hold were used to finance the mighty British navy which finally defeated the formidable Spanish Armada.
The exact dimensions are unknown but researchers suggest that Golden Hind to have a full length of 81' 0" beam of 19' 0", and deep laden draught of 13' 0". The total squadron complements was about 160 men.
